Here’s a cool boxed costume (missing the mask, sadly) by a company I’ve never heard of before, Bland Charnas. This clown is called Bland Charnas 3900 Clown.
It is a typical size for a boxed costume. Bland Charnas’ logo is a little witch on a broomstick. Her body makes up the “B” and “C” of the logo.
The box is primarily orange and green, with black shadowed letters. A owl, a ghost and jack-o-lantern, and bat are all on the front of the box, around the window that would have shown the mask.
Shown is the side, with the decscription and number (Bland Charnas 3900 Clown). This boxed costume was a children’s medium.
The ghost and jack-o-lantern, along with the Bland Charnas logo, are repeated on three sides of the box.
The yellow, red, and blue colors still pop on this costume. A docile clown is surrounded by colorful balloons. The bottom of the costume is yellow pants. I’ve seen this same costume with blue bottoms.
Not sure what year this is. The U.S. flammable fabrics act mentioned on the box was passed in 1953, however, Bland Charnas published a catalog called “All Your Halloween Needs for the 70’s“, published in 1973, so that narrows it down quite a bit.
This costume’s mask has been lost to time, but I think this is probably what it would have looked like.
A neat mask on it’s own, but I wish the mask looked more like the eerily chill clown on the costume itself. Oh well!
